An Average Girl Gets a Life: sure I like football; who doesn’t?

That is a statement that I would never honestly say, but today, I’m going to fake it! A good friend of mine has invited me to a Big XII Championship watch party at a local restaurant. I said sure mostly because I’ve had a more boring than normal week socially and really need some friend time this weekend.

The sad truth though is that I didn’t even know who was playing so I had to do some googling to figure that much out. Now I fear that I’ll show up and be the only one there that won’t have a clue what’s going on. I’ve never been a sports fan and that’s an understatement to say the least. I never paid much attention to football not even when my university made it to the championship game three out of the four years I was there!

My mom has made many comments over the years that she sometimes wonders if I’m really her daughter because I have no interest in watching football or other sporting events. Now, let me mention though that I’m not totally clueless in the sports world, I do know a little about golf, hockey and baseball (Go Cardinals!) and I can probably wing it with basketball. I can play golf, not well, but I know what to do so I don’t look like a complete numskull on the greens. When it comes to hockey I don’t know much, but I do know enough that on a date to a hockey game, I have been known to be more informed than my date! A few years ago a few girlfriends and I all fell for the couch of a local hockey team and soon become educated spectators of the game. What can I say, there’s nothing like a good fight on the ice! As for baseball, it runs in my blood. My grandfather briefly played for the St Louis Cardinals and though he passed away long before I was even a glimmer in my parent’s eyes, it was a requirement growing up that I know that sport.

Anyhow, back to football, I know almost nothing about this game. I know that when they cross the line at the end of the field with the football in hand, they call that a touchdown. You are probably rolling your eyes now wondering is this girl really that clueless? Yes, yes I am. I know they have things call field goals and first and second downs, but I have no idea what they mean. This really is hard for me to admit so please don’t laugh at me too hard! I have a lot of studying to do this afternoon. I’m hoping I can find some sort of football for dummies that will teach me the basics so I know the right moments to cheer and the right times to scoff at the refs. At least I know for certain which team I have to cheer for!

So lets see what we fined…ahha! I found it! This is perfect. http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/football-for-dummies-cheat-sheet.html

Lets hope that I can study this and it will be enough to get me through the game tonight! Wish me luck and GO TEAM!!!

An Average Girl Gets a Life: And so it begins

I don’t know if “average” is the best way to describe me, but it sounds about right. I have an average job. I live in an average apartment with average white walls in an average suburb. I have average friends that do average things for average fun. So why are you going to read about my adventures you may be asking yourself? The answer is because you can relate, sympathize and maybe even be intrigued to follow in my average sized footsteps and to discover some average adventures of your own and if we’re all lucky, discover that life isn’t all that average after all.

Monday through Friday every week, I drive an average commute to an average corporate job where I work in an average cubical. Outside of work, I watch the average latest hit TV show, indulge in averagely unhealthy food and sleep in an average bed. On the weekends is when I get to have a bit of fun or if nothing else see daylight other than just when I’m driving to work.

A few years ago I decided my personal goal/motto for the year was going to “TRY!” Nothing wordy and complicated about my motto, just simple and to the point. There are a lot of things I’ve shied away from in the past and I thought it was time to put an end to it. I may not always get to the finish line or make it through that plate of weird food, but gosh darn it, I tried it! For awhile, I really did well with trying new things and going the extra mile to experience life. I took a ski vacation, tried my hand at rock climbing, took up knitting on cold winter nights, attempted online dating and even got a new job. All was going well until life caught up with me and I lost my new job after only 17 months. My life suddenly stood still. I had no idea what to do next. The reality check made me stop taking chances to an extent. On the other had though, it really made me open up my eyes to what I had stopped doing. It gave me time to get back to some of my passions.

I finally settled into a new job that was way more average than any job I’d ever had before. It’s been just over a year now and suddenly I’ve realized that my life is more average now then ever before.

Recently I saw a decorative sign that said “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.” This is starting to hit home for me. When did I stop dancing in the rain? When did I stop looking for … a life?! Enough is enough, I need to get back out there and live again. Put the remote down and see what experiences I can make happen. So with the new year quickly approaching, I think it’s time to make that change and it starts right now, right here. I’ve always liked writing and when I was jobless, I starting writing again. I’ve never thought I was good, but others thought I had some talent. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if I do or not! LOL. This blog will be my first adventure and the first road I will take to getting a life again.

So enjoy and please tell me what you think and suggestions you may have for my next adventure! Open up the atlas boys and girls, here we go!
